DeNA Co., Ltd.

DeNA Announces Selection as a 2019 Competitive IT Strategy Company

Under METI and TSE Program Recognizing Companies with Strategic IT Initiatives

DeNA Co., Ltd. would like to announce that it has been selected as a 2019 Competitive IT Strategy Company, under the Competitive IT Strategy Company Stock Selection program, which is jointly conducted by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry (METI) and the Tokyo Stock Exchange (TSE) to recognize a selection of outstanding companies for their IT utilization efforts.

What is a Competitive IT Strategy Company?

METI selects TSE-listed companies that have been conducting strategic IT initiatives that lead to increased corporate value and enhanced competitiveness in the mid to long term, and announces these companies as Competitive IT Strategy Companies.

DeNA pursues initiatives in a broad variety of areas, including games, automotive, healthcare, sports, and entertainment, under its vision to "as an eternal venture, bring delight to the world using the internet and AI."

Council Evaluation Comments

"DeNA is making use of digital technologies to solve social issues. DeNA has set up an R&D structure to provide services to those with limited access to transportation and the elderly, and is promoting the creation of an even better work environment and personnel development throughout its organization."

DeNA Initiative Examples

Solving Social Issues Using the Internet & AI:

Automotive & Healthcare Businesses

Japan is on the forefront of a variety of social issues, such as transportation system dysfunction and the increased burden of medical and social security costs due to its super aging society. DeNA is utilizing internet and AI technologies to pursue a variety of initiatives to address these issues.

In 2018, DeNA changed the name of its taxi dispatch app TaxiBell, part of its Automotive Business, to MOV. Following the initial Kanagawa Prefecture launch, the service is now also available in Tokyo Prefecture, and a launch in the Kyoto, Osaka, and Kobe areas is in the works. DeNA plans to implement an AI-driven demand forecasting system, which will provide individualized route recommendations to taxi drivers in real time.

AI Tankyaku Navi (name tentative)

The mission of the Healthcare Business at DeNA is "making the shift from "sick care‟ to "healthcare‟ and lengthening healthy lifespans." DeNA has been working with major insurance companies to develop insurance integrated with wellness programs, and recently announced partnerships with MetLife Insurance and Asahi Mutual Life Insurance.

Building HR Programs and Organizations Focused on Technology

DeNA has proactively engaged in various initiatives in new technology, and recently has been active in R&D in new technical areas, establishing an R&D organization in August 2018 with the aim to use these technologies to contribute to the business side of DeNA. DeNA does not limit itself to existing business areas, and also selects areas collected from employee suggestions, leading to a diverse range of R&D initiatives.

DeNA also established a cross-departmental team in the Automotive Business to pursue technological development in the MaaS (Mobility as a Service) area. DeNA aims to provide the functions necessary to solve transportation system dysfunction through this team of engineers with highly specialized AI, cloud, and automotive industry knowledge. This group is able to pool their expertise to solve related technical issues quickly and at low cost for the various services throughout the Automotive Business.

Promoting Operations Efficiency Using IT Tools, Such as the Business Chat Tool "Slack"

DeNA has engaged in operations efficiency projects using RPA (Robotic Process Automation) beginning June 2017, and to date has automated internal IT management tasks such as account creation & deletion, as well as routine work such as personnel management and accounting tasks. In the approximately one and a half years since automation was rolled out, about 4,000 annual hours of work have been automated.

DeNA also linked the business chat tool Slack and the financial accounting system from June 2018 to enable automatic notifications of expense report submissions and approvals. This dramatically reduced the amount of time required from submission to approval of reports, and contributed to enhanced business speed.

Comment from Atsushi Kobayashi, Managing Executive Officer (CTO), Head of System Management Unit

"Flexibility in handling increasingly complicated monozukuri [Japanese term for the making of things, such as services and technology] is essential for the evolution and growth of a company. DeNA has recently established an R&D environment and programs to enable us to develop a variety of technical competencies, and these programs are open for any employee to participate.

We are already proceeding with several R&D projects, and we expect that by making use of this type of program with a diverse variety of technical viewpoints, we will see greater acceleration in our activities in the future."
