ASX Announcement 29th May 2017 Carnegie delivers renewable energy roadmap, assessment and designs for Mauritius

Carnegie Clean Energy Limited (ASX: CCE) is pleased to announce it has completed a High Penetration Renewable Energy Roadmap, Wave Resource Assessment and Renewable Energy Integrated Hybrid Power Station Design for The Republic of Mauritius. The outcomes were presented at a workshop held in Bagatelle, Mauritius, organised by the Mauritius Research Council in collaboration with the Australian High Commission.

The workshop included key stakeholders such as senior Mauritian Government Ministers, including the Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Energy and Public Utilities, as well as academics, researchers and representatives of the public and private sectors.

To date, the Mauritius project has delivered three main outcomes:

1. An ambitious renewable energy roadmap that provides a pathway towards higher penetration of renewable energy in Mauritius, beyond the current 2025 target of 35% set by the Government of Mauritius.

  1. A detailed assessment of the Mauritian wave energy resource, including deployment of a wave buoy off the south coast of Mauritius, and the identification of a preferred site for commercial CETO wave energy technology.

  2. The detailed design of a wave energy integrated hybrid power station for the island of Rodrigues, stage 1 consisting of 2MW of solar photovoltaic generation capacity and a 2MW/0.5MWh battery energy storage system, combined with automation and intelligent control systems to ensure reliable, utility grade power quality and grid stability. The design allows for high penetration renewable generation whilst maintaining security of supply.

The 12 month, $990,000 project has been funded by the Australian Government in partnership with the Mauritian Government and Carnegie Clean Energy. Key consultees included the Mauritius Research Council, Mauritius Renewable Energy Agency, Central Electricity Board, Ministry of Finance and Economic Development, Ministry of Energy and Public Utilities, and the Rodrigues Regional Assembly.

Neil de Tisi, Carnegie Clean Energy Project Operations Manager said:

Her Excellency Ms Susan Coles, High Commissioner of Australia to Mauritius, said:

Renewable energy, including wave energy, will be a key industry into the future for Mauritius and in Australia, and I hope the Government of Mauritius can now explore opportunities to implement the project recommendations and designs".

Dr Suddhoo, Executive Director of the MRC, said:

"What we have achieved over the last year is a first for many small island developing states in terms of renewable energy penetration, offering energy security and economic diversification and growth. For the MRC, this is an excellent vehicle for new technology transfer to Mauritius and its dependencies, where local and international collaboration is critical."
