AMBU ACCELERATES PLANS FOR INTEGRATING BIOPLASTICS ACROSS FULL PORTFOLIO OF ENDOSCOPES
From early in the fiscal year 2024/25, all Ambu endoscopes shipped to customers will include bioplastics, marking an important step in transforming the industry towards sustainable endoscopy.
As part of Ambu's commitment to improving its carbon footprint, the company is accelerating its plans for integrating bioplastics across its full portfolio of endoscopes.
Last month, Ambu launched the world's first endoscope made with bioplastics, the Ambu® aScopeTM Gastro Large. Now the company is rapidly expanding its use, aimed at driving positive change in the industry in the area of sustainable endoscopy.
From early in the fiscal year 2024/25, all single-useendoscopes shipped to customers will be made with bioplastics - a full year earlier than originally planned. Specifically, all handles of Ambu's single-useendoscopes will be made from bioplastic materials. The bioplastic material (Bio-ABS)has a 70% lower carbon footprint, compared to regular plastics (ABS).
" Over the past decade, Ambu has established itself as the world leader and the partner of choice for health systems looking to benefit from single-useendoscopy. We have achieved this through our commitment to innovation, high quality and reliability. Now sustainability is one of the biggest emerging challenges facing health systems. And as part of our responsibility as world leader, we want health systems to be confident that when they choose Ambu, they also choose a company that is leading the way in sustainability, with tangible, impactful breakthroughs like the one we are announcing today.
BASSEL RIFAI Chief Marketing Officer and President of EMEA & APAC, Ambu
STRONG COMMITMENT TO CIRCULAR PRODUCTS AND PACKAGING
With its ZOOM IN strategy, Ambu committed itself to paving the way towards sustainable endoscopy through a dedicated focus on circular products and packaging.
The use of bioplastics in all of Ambu's endoscope handles marks an important first step in transforming the industry towards sustainable endoscopy. Looking ahead, the company is already looking into new and innovative ways of introducing bioplastic materials in more endoscope parts, as well as in its range of primary packaging.
" Innovation is at the core of Ambu's DNA. In 2009, we pioneered the field of single-useendoscopy, and now, we are venturing into the field of sustainable endoscopy. We want to deliver solutions that not only improve healthcare for professionals and patients, but also help our customers reduce their carbon footprint in our shared efforts to safeguard the planet. By reducing the carbon footprint of our endoscopes, and by extension the footprint of health systems across the world, we are proud to be spearheading this transformation, for the benefit of Ambu, our customers and the world.

A MORE SUSTAINABLE SOURCE OF MATERIAL

The bioplastic material that Ambu is introducing in its fleet of single-use endoscopes is derived from bio-based second- generation feedstock, mixed with fossil-based feedstock. Second-generation feedstock aligns with the principles of a circular economy, where materials are continuously reused and waste is minimised. Because second-generation feedstock is waste materials and by-products (e.g. recycled food waste), competition with food production is avoided, and the burden on agricultural resources is reduced. In addition, the use of second-generation feedstock incentivises better waste management practices because it leaves open the possibility to recycle organic waste into valuable resources. Together, these represent important advantages that bioplastics have with regard to the environment.
