Established in 1983, the award is presented annually to companies and mines that exemplify safety throughout West Virginia.

    --  Marfork Coal Company - Allen Powellton Mine - Underground Mine
        Classification
    --  Alex Energy - Edwight Mining - Surface Mine Classification
    --  Mammoth Coal Company - Preparation Plant - Plant/Facilities
        Classification

The Mountaineer Guardian Awards were presented at a luncheon in conjunction with the annual West Virginia Mining Symposium in Charleston, West Virginia.

The Marfork Coal Company - Allen Powellton Mine, located in Raleigh County West Virginia, worked more than 102,000 exposure hours in 2010 and reported no lost time injuries.

The Alex Energy - Edwight Mine, located in Raleigh County West Virginia, worked more than 323,000 exposure hours in 2010 and reported no lost time injuries.

The Mammoth Coal - Preparation Plant, located in Kanawha County West Virginia, worked more than 167,000 exposure hours in 2010 and reported no lost time injuries.
