All the Elements for a Better World
Highlights from Albemarle's 2023 Sustainability Report
AVOIDED EMISSIONS
Life Cycle Avoided Green House Gas (GHG) Emissions
(Average EV sedan, based on the 2023 Global Electric Grid)
- Electric vehicles (EVs) emit less carbon in their use phase than that of an internal combustible engine vehicle (ICEV). The emissions Albemarle generates ultimately contribute to reduced life cycle emissions in the auto industry.
- The average EV life cycle produces 47% lower GHG emissions vs. an ICEV, taking into account production.
- Lithium production represents <4% of EV GHG production emissions.
Every 1 ton of GHG emitted in Albemarle's lithium production enables the avoidance of 65 tons of GHG emissions across the life of an EV.
EXPANDING OUR LIFE CYCLE ASSESSMENTS Pathway to Lower Carbon Bromine
We completed our first in-house product carbon footprint (PCF) study of our elemental bromine produced in Magnolia, Arkansas. This PCF was third-party verified as ISO compliant.
The completion of this PCF highlights:
- How our sustainability initiatives have improved the carbon footprint of our bromine production compared to our 2019 baseline
-
Future opportunities to decarbonize and identify emissions hotspots
Chile met its 2030 freshwater intensity reduction target. This was driven by the optimization of our thermal evaporator.
CONTINUED PROGRESS ON ENVIRONMENTAL GOALS
Unless noted otherwise, the target goals listed below are based on scope 1 and 2, with a 2019 baseline and a 2030 completion date.
GOAL | STATUS | ||
Grow our Energy Storage business in a carbon intensity neutral manner | On track
Reduce carbon intensity of Specialties by 35% | On track on an absolute basis
Behind on an intensity basis
Engage with suppliers to collect primary data for 75% (by 2023) and 90% | On track
(by 2024) of our raw material carbon footprint
Reduce the intensity of freshwater usage by 25% in Chile and Jordan | On track
Reduce SOx emissions by 90% by 2027 (vs 2022) | On track

NEW DOUBLE MATERIALITY ASSESSMENT
In 2023, we conducted a double materiality assessment to identify the sustainability issues that matter most to Albemarle and our stakeholders.
This assessment looks at how we affect the world around us and how the world impacts Albemarle's operations. As a result, we updated our sustainability framework to evolve key areas such as:
Waste and Circularity
Responsible Sourcing
Innovation
Talent and Culture
