Japan Airlines will buy 32 aircraft from Airbus and 10 from Boeing, the Japanese carrier announced on Thursday, purchasing its first single-aisle aircraft from the European manufacturer.

Japan's second-largest carrier plans to buy 21 Airbus A350-900 and 10 Boeing 787 Dreamliner wide-body jets, and 11 A321 narrow-body jets.

An additional A350-900 will replace the aircraft destroyed in a collision on the tarmac at Haneda airport in January, JAL said in its press release.

The aircraft are scheduled for delivery between fiscal 2025 and 2033, and the order is worth $12.39 billion (€11.35 billion) at list price.

JAL explains that it is ordering these new-generation, more fuel-efficient aircraft now, as the shortage of aircraft, triggered by the rebound in demand for air transport following the pandemic, is set to continue.
