ABB announces that it has been chosen by the SMS Group - a specialist in plant construction and mechanical engineering for the metallurgical industry - to supply its latest generation of drives to the H2 Green Steel plant in Boden, Sweden.

The project is currently in its first phase, with production scheduled to start at the end of 2025. It will involve using hydrogen in the furnaces rather than fossil fuels, resulting in steel with 95% lower CO2 emissions than conventional methods.

'We are proud to play a part in transforming the steel industry as it moves towards hydrogen combustion,' said Chris Poynter, President of the System Drives Division, ABB Motion.

ABB will supply around 1,200 ACS880 low-voltage (LV) drives for use in nine demanding areas of the plant, including the tunnel furnace, the plate rolling mill and the annealing and galvanizing line.
