The Labor Department announced that 242,000 new U.S. jobless claims were registered for the week ending June 3, up 13,000 on the previous week.

The four-week moving average - more representative of the underlying trend - came in at 227,000, up 4,750 on the previous week.

Finally, the number of people receiving regular benefits rose by 30,000 to 1,820,000 during the week of May 27, the most recent period available for this statistic.
