NAIROBI--The Kenyan cabinet on Monday lifted the ban on the cultivation of genetically modified crops in response to the worst drought to affect the East Africa region in 40 years, the presidential office said Tuesday.

The cabinet also authorized the importation of food crops and animal feeds produced through biotechnology innovations, it said in a tweet.

The decision made at a cabinet meeting is aimed at improving crop yields and food security in the country, the president's office said.

Kenya's main crop imports include wheat, maize, sugar, and rice, according to the agriculture ministry statistics. The crops are also cultivated in the country.
