By Washington, DC - TechAmerica, the leading U.S. technology trade association, released the statement below from President and CEO Shawn Osborne, following the President's State of the Union address to the nation.
"The President delivered a prescription for the future of our country tonight, one that will require the cooperation of the Administration and Congress as well as the business and community leaders around the country. We couldn't be happier with the focus on preparing American youth for the jobs that are available today and the jobs of tomorrow -jobs in the tech industry.
The technology industry, one of the greatest American success stories, has five open jobs for one qualified applicant. With the key investments in education and job training described tonight, and bipartisan passage of immigration reform, those jobs will be filled and the U.S. tech industry will continue to lead the world.
We are the industry of entrepreneurs; the people who start their game-changing companies in their basements, garages and dorm rooms; nurturing and supporting the jobs that are the future of this country. But all this starts with supporting basic research. The President is right; let's reverse the drastic cuts to the seed corn of American innovation.
The President kept up the drumbeat on immigration reform tonight. Our immigration system is broken and we truly believe that Congress and the President can find common ground that will move us to a workable solution to ensure that qualified, highly-skilled immigrants, among others, can take part in the American dream. This is doable. And we look forward to working with the Administration and the Congress this year to get it done.
The President also spoke about opportunity tonight and for the 1.5 million American jobs that rely on exports, working to increase and nurture vital trade relationships is critical. There is momentum in Congress to pass critical trade agreements, now's the time to make it happen.
The bottom line of tonight's speech is that there can be no progress without all of us pitching in; all of us working together to get things done. "
