By The Pennsylvania Society announced today that it has selected retired PNC Executive Chairman, Financial Services Group James E. Rohr as the recipient of its 2014 Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement.

The Society’s Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement has been awarded annually for more than 100 years. Rohr will formally receive his award at the Society’s 116th annual dinner in New York on December 13, 2014.
“Jim Rohr exemplifies the spirit and character for which the Gold Medal award is intended,” said newly-elected Pennsylvania Society President Nicholas DeBenedictis, who follows James E. Nevels as president. “Throughout his career, Jim has always found time to give back to the community, particularly with respect to children and education. It was Jim who provided the vision for PNC Grow Up Great—a $350 million, multi-year, bilingual initiative that began in 2004 to support early childhood education. Mr. Rohr’s promotion of the program included testifying before Congress about the importance of preparing children for school. Throughout the years, James Rohr has donated his time to philanthropic organizations including the Allegheny Conference on Community Development and chaired the Pittsburgh 250 initiative. He also led PNC to become the largest bank in Pennsylvania and one of the largest in the country, and has been widely recognized since the financial crisis as a financial services leader who did the job the right way on behalf of PNC’s customers, shareholders, employees and the communities where the bank operates.”
Each year, The Pennsylvania Society awards its Gold Medal for Distinguished Achievement to a prominent person in recognition of leadership, citizenship and contributions to the arts, science, education and industry. In addition to the honor itself, The Pennsylvania Society contributes to a Pennsylvania charity chosen by the recipient of the Gold Medal, subject only to the approval of the Society Council.
Past recipients have included Vice President Joe Biden, M. Night Shyamalan, George H.W. Bush, Tom Ridge, Chris Matthews, Arlen Specter, Dan Rooney, David McCullough and Guion Bluford.
The Society is a non-profit, charitable organization with over 2,000 members around the Commonwealth, the United States and the world. It is not affiliated with any particular political party, business or profession. Its purpose is to honor achievement, to reward excellence, to promote good will and understanding and to celebrate service to the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania and to humanity in general.
