America's ag economy is under tremendous stress. In Nebraska, sagging commodity prices are hurting rural families and communities and spurring a significant revenue shortfall for the state government.

Meanwhile, congressional agriculture committees are set to begin discussions on crafting the next farm bill.

It was distressing that until last week, the committee assignments for the new Congress didn't include a Nebraska lawmaker on either the House or Senate Agriculture Committee.

News that the House Republican leadership has given Rep. Don Bacon a seat on the House Agriculture Committee is welcome, not least since competition for the committee was so heavy. The state's farm groups need to keep Bacon and his staff well informed in coming months about their key concerns as Congress develops and debates the next farm bill.

It's a big help to Nebraska to have direct input in committee on congressional farm legislation, whose legislative details can ultimately affect Nebraska in important ways.
