Pennsylvania hospital employment decreased by 500 jobs from November to December, for total direct employment of 271,300. This is 400 more hospital jobs than one year ago, December 2014, when the total number was 270,900.

The Pennsylvania Department of Labor and Industry reports that Pennsylvania's total nonfarm seasonally adjusted jobs were up 9,800 jobs in December to a record high of 5,863,500. The largest increase in jobs in December was in the Leisure & Hospitality super sector, with a gain of 3,700 jobs, which was a record high. The civilian labor force in Pennsylvania increased by 18,000 to 6,446,000, while unemployment declined by 15,000 in December.

The largest increase in jobs since December 2014 was in the Education & Health Services Supersector (up 14,300 jobs).

The state's unemployment rate was down 0.2 percent to 4.8 percent for December, the lowest rate since February 2008. This rate is below the U.S. unemployment rate of 5.0 percent, which remained unchanged from November.
