EvidenceCare, a Nashville-based innovator in clinical decision support technology, announced its partnership with MCG Health, part of the Hearst Health network, to embed MCG’s industry-leading admission indications into the EvidenceCare clinical decision support tool.

EvidenceCare is a patient-centered support software which was conceived in 2014 to enable healthcare providers to access evidence-based treatment recommendations within their clinical workflow. The solution was designed to drive quality care while promoting patient safety and reducing unwarranted variation in care delivery.

With the new partnership arrangement, admission indications from the MCG care guidelines will be integrated with EvidenceCare’s point-of-care protocols to support clinicians and their hospitals with improving the quality of patient care. MCG is one of the healthcare industry’s most trusted resources in guiding appropriate level of care decisions when patients are being admitted to a hospital. MCG is used by nearly 1,900 U.S. hospitals nationwide and eight of the largest health plans to help ensure patients are receiving the care they need in the proper setting. It can also assist clinicians with strong clinical documentation which helps achieve proper reimbursements from payers.

In 2016, EvidenceCare launched its innovative, web-based technology platform and currently has a variety of protocols for emergency medicine, antibiotic stewardship, gastroenterology, urgent care and more. EvidenceCare content is accredited by the American College of Emergency Physicians as well as the American College of Gastroenterology and can qualify clinicians for continuing medical education credit.

In addition, EvidenceCare includes a patient education tool that enhances communication between provider and patient and a feature that accelerates documentation into any electronic health record (EHR). The company’s Enterprise version of the software integrates with hospital EHRs to streamline provider workflow, improve patient outcomes and reduce unwarranted variations in care while simultaneously mitigating risk for the hospital and provider.

EvidenceCare founder and CEO, Dr. Brian Fengler, said the partnership will provide clinicians a way to deliver improved healthcare more responsibly:

“As an emergency physician, my primary focus is delivering the best care to my patients in a high-stakes environment,” Fengler said. “Usually, I allowed the hospital case manager to complete the required documentation to justify the admission and assign the appropriate level of care based on my clinical recommendations. When I later learned about the impacts this has on hospital revenue and patient satisfaction, the value a solution like EvidenceCare (informed by MCG) would have in the hands of emergency physicians became apparent. However, the real challenge was this decision-making tool was previously not part of the standard clinical workflow. Thus, you wouldn’t have been able to drive the needed process change along with all the other responsibilities currently shouldered by emergency medicine physicians.”

EvidenceCare co-founder and COO, Jim Jamieson, who spent more than half of his career in the hospital revenue cycle sector, said the partnership with MCG could have a monumental financial impact for hospitals.

“We recently conducted a review for a large health system where we learned they lose more than $400,000 each day due to admissions or non-admissions with inadequate documentation to support the level of care decision,” Jamieson said. “Embedding admission indications from MCG care guidelines into our tool will allow hospitals to capture the full value for the services they provide. We’re excited about the potential this partnership with MCG will bring to EvidenceCare and the hospitals we serve.”
