Communications services companies were little changed, weighed down by a 4.6% drop in Paramount Global shares following the news that Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway pared its holdings in the company.
Shares in Google parent Alphabet fell 2.2% after reports that rival OpenAI could be planning to launch its own web search tool.
Apple lost 0.2% and Meta Platforms rose 2.3% after the Facebook parent published instructions encouraging advertisers to use a workaround to avoid paying a 30% service charge to Apple. Berkshire Hathaway trimmed its flagship position in Apple last quarter, a filing showed after the market closed on Wednesday.
