OTTAWA--Canada's merchandise-trade deficit with the rest of the world widened in May to the highest level in 11 months as pullbacks in shipments of metals and energy products contributed to lower exports.

The country posted a goods-trade deficit for the month of 1.93 billion Canadian dollars, the equivalent of about US$1.41 billion, Statistics Canada said Wednesday. The market was expecting a deficit of C$1.27 billion, according to economists at TD Securities, following April's upwardly revised deficit of C$1.32 billion.

Exports fell 2.6% to C$62.45 billion in the latest month, while imports declined 1.6% to C$64.37 billion, the data agency said.
