In 1997, the company merged with Food&Drug Smith Centers. Few months later, Fred Meyer Inc., a north-western US retailer merged with Burkle group. Together the two companies own 265 stores in 11 States.

Less than a year later, the giant Kroger, already the first supermarket chain in the United States proposed to purchase Smith-Fred Meyer for $13.5 billion. In 1999, when the merger is operational, the new company counts 2 200 stores in 31 States. Benefit for Yucaica: $1.8 billion.
