National Pensions Reserve Fund (NPRF) was established by the Irish Government in 2001 to meet as much as possible of the costs of Ireland's social welfare and public service pensions from 2025 onwards when these costs are projected to increase due to the aging population. The NPRF Commission believes that environmental, social and governance issues impact long-term investment performance and is developing and implementing a Responsible Investment policy which will be consistent with the United Nations Principles for Responsible Investment, to which it was a founding signatory in 2006 along with some of the world's largest institutional investors. NPRF is also a signatory to the Carbon Disclosure Project, a global mechanism whereby investors encourage companies to disclose their greenhouse gas emissions.
