The Greentree Foundation offers a comprehensive ecology workshop as a professional development program for state certified elementary, middle, and high school teachers and administrators primarily serving Long Island, Queens, and Brooklyn. The private company is based in New York, NY. The workshop aims to enhance educators’ knowledge and instructional skills related to Long Island’s natural ecology, geological history, and environmental challenges, supporting integration of place-based, outdoor learning aligned with state science standards. The program begins with a week-long immersive session in July at Greentree’s 400-acre natural property, featuring outdoor lectures and ecological studies, and continues throughout the school year with seven Saturday field trips to various Long Island natural sites, including state parks, wildlife refuges, and an astronomy night at Hofstra University. The workshop emphasizes hands-on, inquiry-driven learning experiences that foster critical thinking, environmental literacy, and multidisciplinary connections across subjects. Participants must attend all 12 days and are eligible to earn up to 70 continuing teacher and leader education credits through Adelphi University, with an option for graduate credits. Administrators may participate selectively to support teacher leadership and curriculum development. The program encourages collaboration among educators to build professional networks, share best practices, and advocate for outdoor education within schools, culminating in a graduation reception and certificate of completion.
