• Neumann: "To meet the demand of our customers more capacity is needed."

The Volkswagen Group is further expanding its production capacities in China. Therefore, Shanghai Volkswagen (SVW) is to build a new car plant in Ningbo, Zhejiang Province. "China has become one of the largest and one of the most important markets for Volkswagen Group", said Dr. Karl-Thomas Neumann, President and CEO of the Volkswagen Group China (VGC) today at a signing ceremony in Ningbo. To meet the increasing demand of the Chinese customers more production capacity is needed, he added. "With our unprecedented investment program, we intend to increase our capacities in China to three million vehicles per year by 2013/14."

The Ningbo factory is part of the China investment program of €14 billion. To maintain its leading position on the Chinese passenger car market, Volkswagen Group China is investing this record amount in new models and in the expansion of production capacities by 2016.

The new Ningbo plant is designed to have an annual output capacity of about 300,000 vehicles per year and is scheduled to be completed by 2014. A complete production facility with press shop, body shop, paint shop and an assembly unit is to be constructed. The new plant will have a workforce of several thousand employees by 2015.

Shanghai Volkswagen has car plants in Shanghai (three production lines) and in Nanjing. Another plant in Yizheng, Jiangsu province is under construction. The Ningbo plant will be the sixth production line for Shanghai Volkswagen.

FAW-Volkswagen has car plants in Changchun (two production lines) and one in Chengdu. The plant at Foshan (under construction) will be the first car manufacturing facility of FAW-Volkswagen in Southern China.

Together with its partners FAW-Volkswagen and Shanghai Volkswagen, the Volkswagen Group produces more than 20 models of the brands Volkswagen, Škoda and Audi in China.
