Our Under-18s faced an unfamiliar scenario as they secured a 2-0 win against Birmingham City on Saturday.

The visitors were reduced to 10 men on 21 minutes and then nine men just before the break in this Premier Academy League encounter at Spurs Lodge.

The lads controlled possession from the first red card and spent the rest of the game trying to break down the two banks of four players guarding the Blues net.

The first sending off came when Emmit Delfouneso bundled over Grant Ward when he was through on goal midway through the first half.

Lee Angol stepped up and confidently slotted home the penalty.

Ramil Sheriff cleared off the line from Deqwon Ebanks in Birmingham's sole attack but for all our possession, visiting goalkeeper Nick Townsend was only seriously tested once to deny Roman Michael-Percil on 40 minutes.

The second red followed after 41 minutes, this time full-back Kortney Hause for a somewhat reckless tackle again on Ward.

Paul McBride was introduced for Connor Ogilvie at half-time and marked only his second substitute appearance after a second serious knee injury with a fine goal to make it 2-0 just four minutes after the break.

Ruben Lameiras spotted McBride's run and he finished well.

"It was fantastic to see Paul back," said coach Alex Inglethorpe. "He's had to recover from injuring the same knee and showed real resolve to get on with his work and get back.

"It's not a scenario we're used to facing and I liked the fact that we tried to do the right things," added Alex.

"We kept the ball and we must have made over 1,000 passes in the game as we tried to open them up.

"They ended up playing with two banks of four and no striker, so it was a case of trying to be patient, trying to create an overload in areas and it was difficult.

"In a strange way though, I think both teams got something out of the game."

Spurs U18s: McGee; Sheriff (Akindayini, 60), Ekong, A McQueen, Ogilvie (McBride, 46); Ward, Smith, Lameiras, Michael-Percil; Angol (Winks, 60), Zapata-Caicedo. Unused sub: Granger.
