Tata Power, India's largest integrated power company, has been immensely committed to the cause of sustainable development and has undertaken various initiatives for conservation of nature and protection of biodiversity. In line with its 'Leadership with Care' model, Tata Power has successfully implemented several sustainable resolutions for the year 2015 in the area of Environment, Societal commitment, Bio-diversity as also Conservation of resources and values. These initiatives were aimed at safeguarding the ecosystem, species and genetic diversity and has benefitted more than 500 people across 94 catchment area villages of operations including citizens and employees.

As a part of its centenary year celebrations this year, the Company launched 'Act for Mahseer', a call-to-action national public campaign aimed at spreading awareness and preserving this valuable fish. The breeding centre set up at Lonavla as part of its eco-restoration and eco-development project for the lakes in 1975 has bred more than 10 lakh fingerlings till date. More than 1500 people have pledged to 'Act for Mahseer' on the microsite and contributed towards the initiative by participating in core conservation initiatives such as donation drives, volunteering for habitat adoption, awareness drivers and many others. In the past year, Tata Power has also carried out cage culture and ranching programmes successfully and demonstrated the use of such research programmes for replication all over the country. Around 300 fishery scientists have also been trained till date to continue conservation efforts.

Endeavouring to keep the ecological balance intact and promote more greenery and forestation, Tata Power carried out over 19 tree plantation drives across all its plant sites, planting over 10 lakh saplings. More than one lakh saplings were planted in a day around the catchment areas of Maval and Mulshi areas with the help of 5000 volunteers from the nearby community, school & college students. Further, as a part of the celebrations of International Day for Biological Diversity, Tata Power launched unique employee engagement initiatives which included 'Site Biodiversity Mascot' and monthly photography contests etc. Nearly 100 employees across Tata Power operations participated in this initiative and identified unique species as their 'Site Biodiversity Mascot'.

In another such initiative towards the green movement, Tata Power built a beautiful Butterfly Garden at Tata Power's Trombay Thermal Power Station (TTPS) premises. The garden boasts of about 45 species of butterflies and, in order to attract more species of butterflies, several host plants like Lime, Kadipatta, Bryophyta, and Calotropis, and nectar plants like Stachtarpeta, Ixora, Lantanas, etc. have been planted.
