With the Lions playing host to Beira-Mar this Sunday afternoon, we have put together 10 facts about the fixture.

The first Sporting-Beira-Mar national championship game was played on the 11th of March 1962, in the old Estádio José Alvalade. Played on matchday 19, Sporting got off to a shaky start following an own goal by Morato after 12 minutes. However, the Alvalade boys recovered and goals from Géo and Morais claimed a 2-1 win in a season that would see Sporting go on to lift its 11th national title.

Beira-Mar can claim just the single national championship win in Alvalade, occurring on the 19th of December 1971. Nelinho struck on 4 minutes to score the only goal of the game. Since that fixture, the Lions have built up an impressive record of 18 wins and three draws.

The fixture rarely results in a thrashing, with the two most one-sided results both ending 4-0: in 1972/1973, with goals from Tomé (2), Yazalde and Chico, and in 1976/1977, with goals from Keita (2), Camilo and Manuel Fernandes. Sporting has also put five past Beira-Mar on one occasion, winning 5-2 in the 1973/1974 season thanks to goals from Marinho (3), Dinis and Yazalde.

Sporting's biggest run of wins against Beira-Mar in Alvalade stands at 6, between the 10th of February 1990 (2-0, goals from Cadete and Silas) and the 30th of October 1994 (2-0, goals from Juskowiak and an own-goal from Pedro Miguel).

One of the most emotional fixtures between the two was played on the 5th of May. On what was the final day of the second, a 2-1 Sporting win saw the league title come to Alvalade for the 18th time. Mário Jardel scored a brace in that match to secure his place as the European Golden Boot Winner with 42 goals in 30 games.

In the new Estádio José Alvalade, Sporting has already hosted Beira-Mar on four occasions. All four have resulted in a home win, with Sporting having scored seven goals and having conceded just one. The first game was played on the 20th of October 2003, finishing 3-1 (João Pinto and a brace from Liedson).

Sporting's most common winning scoreline in the fixture is 2-0 (occurring seven times in 20 wins), last happening in the 2006/2007 season thanks to a goal from Abel (his first for the club) and a strike from Liedson.

The Sporting-Beira-Mar national championship game was played on the 6th of March 2011. Under the guidance of coach José Couceiro, the Lions won the day through a single strike by Matias Fernandez.

Sporting and Beira-Mar have already met 25 times in league games in Alvalade. The Lions have won 20, drawn 4 and lost just 1. In terms of goals, the Lions dominate by a ratio of 50-11, making for an average of two scored each game for every 0.4 conceded.

Jorge Cadete and Liedson, both with four, are the fixture's most prolific scorers in the league. Marinho, Jordão, Juskowiak and Jardel follow in second with three each.
