SPIRIT ENJOYS DOUBLE SUCCESS AT THE FOOTPRINT AWARDS

Spirit Pub Company has been recognised for its energy efficiency and environmentally efficient logistics at the 2015 Footprint Foodservice Awards.

Firstly, Spirit, in association with Total Gas & Power and Inenco won the Energy Efficiency Award, being recognised for 'Project Discovery'; described by the judges as: "An initiative with massive scale and great engagement".

Following Spirit's philosophy of creating long term relationships to unlock hidden value, a long term contract was signed with Total Gas & Power in October 2014. This provided the business with a platform to revamp its energy supply chain and in conjunction with Inenco, 'Project Discovery' was launched.

The project is about pure collaboration, information is shared among key partners focusing efforts in areas that are not only sustainable but where objectives can be achieved efficiently. Since its launch, significant progress has been made via a number of initiatives reducing cost, consumption and the impact compliance has upon the business.

Secondly, Spirit's key logistics partner of choice, Kuehne + Nagel Food Service, won the Environmentally Efficient Logistics Award.

One of the key reasons behind Kuehne + Nagel winning the award was down to the partnership approach with Spirit, showing a desire to change the way the supply chain operates. In partnership with Iveco, Solomon and Frigoblock, Spirit and Kuehne + Nagel developed a unique hybrid vehicle, that included using technology that underpins Spirit and Kuehne + Nagel's social responsibilities, such as the Frigoblock refrigeration unit, removing the need for red diesel and utilising vehicle cameras to support driver performance and safety.

Together, by consolidating the supply chain, removing a fragmented supply chain approach, Spirit reduced approximately 49,000 deliveries to pub during the last 12 months, saving 76 tonnes of CO2 emissions per annum, whilst also collecting 15,000 tonnes of waste from pub via Spirit and Kuehne + Nagel's already award winning reverse logistics solution.
