Amsterdam, 5th December 2017: Sotheby's announces today that Drs. Sarah de Clercq has been appointed Managing Director of Sotheby's in the Netherlands. With twenty years' experience in the art market, and far- reaching expertise, she will be working side-by-side with Albertine Verlinde, Chairman of Sotheby's in the Netherlands, and a longstanding member of the company, who has worked with generations of Dutch collectors since first joining Sotheby's in 1979.

Sarah and Albertine will together work closely with colleagues on the ground and with Sotheby's wider international teams to maximise the company's presence and activities in the region. Sarah will start in her new role in January 2018.

Jan Prasens, Managing Director of Sotheby's Europe, said: "We are delighted to welcome Sarah to Sotheby's. Her wealth of experience, specialist knowledge and strong connections across the cultural community, both in the Netherlands and abroad, make her a wonderful addition to our team."

Albertine Verlinde said: "Sarah's understanding of the art market, combined with her close engagement with the wider art community, both in the Netherlands and beyond, mean that she has her finger very firmly on the pulse of the many developments and opportunities in our world. At the same time, she is a real academic - someone who has published widely and who continues to collaborate closely with museums and other academic institutions. It's this special combination of market intelligence and academic standing that makes her such a standout addition to our team. We are thrilled to have Sarah on board, and I am tremendously excited at the prospect of our working together towards what I know will be a busy and fruitful future for Sotheby's here."

Sarah de Clercq said: "Ever since the 16th century, the Netherlands has been a key centre both for artistic production and for the art market. While of course Old Masters are absolutely key to our past and our present, art forms from the other end of the historical spectrum are similarly important today, most notably those of Contemporary Art, Design, and Photography - all fields in which Dutch collectors are currently very active. Working hand-in-hand with Albertine, I hope to be able to provide for our clients opportunities and experiences that span the whole gamut of their interests, and that speak to our past as well as to an exciting future."

Sotheby's Amsterdam

Sotheby's has been operating in Amsterdam since 1974, when it took over the leading local auction house Mak van Waay. The Amsterdam saleroom hosted many important single owner sales, including those of the Unicorno Collection (2002-2004), the Klaver Collection (1994), and the Wetzlar Collection (1977). Sotheby's Amsterdam has traditionally played a key role in wider European initiatives, working particularly closely with Belgium and with Germany, and leading the organisation of a series of landmark German house sales, including those of Thurn und Taxis (1993), Baden Baden (1995), and Hanover (2005). Some of the more recent, historic sales staged in our Amsterdam auction rooms have been the BAT Artventure (2010-2011) sale and the Property from the Estate of Queen Juliana of The Netherlands (2011).

Today, Dutch collectors are particularly active in the fields of Old Masters and Contemporary Art; however, they also collect across a wide range of disciplines, including Fine & Decorative Arts, African and Oceanic Art, as well as across the full spectrum of Luxury & Lifestyle categories, including Jewels, Watches, Cars, and Wine. Sotheby's experienced Dutch team works closely with collectors in the region, offering a full range of services pertaining both to buying and selling (the Netherlands remains an important sourcing centre for Sotheby's international sales), as well as valuations both for sale and for insurance purposes.

Sarah de Clercq

Sarah is a Senior Expert in 19th and 20th Century European Art and sits on the board of several renowned associations, including the Titus Cirkel of the Rembrandt Association, the classical music festival Grachtenfestival, and the castle and estate Duivenvoorde Foundation. Furthermore, Sarah is the author of numerous articles, books, and exhibition catalogues on 19th century Dutch paintings, particularly the work of Hendrik Willem Mesdag (2015) and Johannes Evert Hendrik Akkeringa (2010). Sarah also works closely with museums, organising exhibitions and advising museums on exhibitions and acquisitions of 19th-century and early 20th-century art.

Sarah joins Sotheby's from Christie's Amsterdam, where she has been Head of Department, Senior Specialist, and Senior Associate Director for Old Masters and 19th Century Art (including Impressionism) since 2013. She first joined Christie's Amsterdam in 2000 as a specialist in 19th Century European Art, before becoming Head of the 19th Century European Art department in 2005, and Head of the Impressionist and Modern Art department in 2009.

Albertine Verlinde
