(Phoenix, Ariz.) -- According to an innovative group of American Meteorological Society (AMS) 2015 Annual Meeting attendees, the public could benefit from a few savvy mobile applications that use weather analysis to make their lives a bit easier.

Science Applications International Corp. (NYSE: SAIC) conducted a 10-day online crowdsourcing event using Topcoder™, inviting AMS conference attendees and innovators in the weather industry to tell the Company their ideas on how the public can use National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) weather, water, and/or climate data to provide a societal benefit in a new or unique way.

Following the event, SAIC judges from its Software Integration Service Line selected five winners and awarded a top prize of $2,000, and a total of $3,600 among all winners. The winners were required to combine NOAA data with other public data types in non-traditional ways; provide a societal benefit; and support the tenants of NOAA's Weather Ready Nation.

Based on the contest parameters, the submissions were also judged on feasibility of implementing the idea, the size of the potential user base and its marketability, and the overall appeal of the idea.

SAIC selected the following winners:
  1. A weather-based traffic forecasting and driving route app that takes current weather forecasts and analyzes it against similar patterns that have impacted traffic in the past. Using the data, the app can predict traffic conditions and recommend alternate routes.
  2. A weather uncertainty tracker app that combines NOAA forecasts with multiple local forecasts for better accuracy in local communities.
  3. A weather emergency app that improves upon the current Wireless Emergency Alert system by altering users to threats in their current area regardless of their cell phone registration.
  4. A weather ready nation app that integrates weather in multiple, everyday functions such as commuting, trip planning, medical preparedness, and emergency evacuations
  5. A medical preparedness app that provides hospitals, pharmacies, and other healthcare providers with specific plans for an emergency response.
