• Russian residents can now pay for shopping using their fingerprint at any Azbuka Vkusa supermarket that has biometric POS terminals, regardless of where they signed up for the service.
  • To make a payment, place your finger on the terminal and then enter your password to confirm the purchase.
  • The service is already available at 20 Azbuka Vkusa supermarkets, and will be added to more locations soon.

10 January 2019, Moscow - Thanks to cooperation between Sberbank and Azbuka Vkusa, Russian residents can pay for shopping using their fingerprint at all AV supermarkets that are equipped with biometric POS terminals, regardless of where they signed up for this service. Previously clients could only use fingerprint payment at the supermarket where they registered their biometric details.

Also it is now even easier to sign up for the service and start using it. After the quick registration process, which takes place at a checkout, clients tie two fingerprints to a Visa or MasterCard bank card and confirm the registration by coming up with a password. Payments can then be made at all stores with biometric POS terminals by scanning a fingerprint and confirming the transaction with the password. It is not necessary to use a bank card or a smartphone. Two-factor payment (biometrics and password) is required to ensure additional reliability and security as the service is rolled out.

The project's participants do not store any of the clients' biometric data - after the data is scanned, it is transformed into a unique set of numerical codes. Each code is given an identifier, which is held in a database and tied to the bank card which was presented during registration.

Svetlana Kirsanova, Deputy Chairman of the Executive Board of Sberbank and Head of the Retail Business Block:

'Sberbank continues to carry out its strategy to deploy biometric identification tools in banking processes. Using biometrics in merchant acquiring not only lets people make payments without physical carriers, such as cards, smartphones and other gadgets, but also paves the way for new innovative customer service scenarios at retail chains.'

Georgy Mikhailov, Vice President for IT and Innovation at Azbuka Vkusa:

'Azbuka Vkusa makes every effort to provide its clients with innovations that make their shopping experience as comfortable as possible. Thanks to technology, biometric payments have already become part of everyday consumer behaviour. Increasing the number of stores that have biometric POS terminals will make the payment process fast, convenient and highly secure.'

In 2019 it is planned to install biometric POS terminals at all Azbuka Vkusa supermarkets and AV Daily minimarkets located within Moscow's Third Ring Road. Biometric payment is currently available at 20 Azbuka Vkusa supermarkets.
