Goodbye scale problems. Hello global growth.

Global merchants are increasingly demanding global acquiring - one bank or service provider to handle all their sales worldwide. They also want FX, risk, treasury and gateway services behind-the-scenes, which they can deploy country to country. The best way to do this is probably by processing and settling all transactions centrally within one system.

Similarly issuers are growing their businesses globally by diversifying into new markets, or through mergers and acquisitions. They need to feel confident that their infrastructure and existing relationships can to scale as their business grows.

Global processing is great in theory, but in practice there have always been the limitations of scale…until now.

Operating at scale

The BankWORKS® payment processing software from RS2 can now comfortably process global acquiring and issuing volumes. A recent benchmark test on a new hardware and software configuration from Hewlett Packard Enterprise (HPE) gave some very pleasing results - both in terms of throughput capacity and response times.

We were processing up to 62 million transactions per hour on BankWORKS® software on the HPE Superdome X. That's around 8,600 authorisations per second. The average response time for our web-based user interface was 0.096 seconds, for our merchant portal 0.05 seconds and web services 0.025 seconds.

Overcoming network latency

Network latency is the delay in data communication over a network. Sometimes the physical distance between two points of communication may automatically add a delay to the speed of communication. This may be significant when processing online authorisations from all around the world centrally. Our solution is to deploy authorisation servers locally, but processing servers, which receive data from the local server asynchronously, centrally.

Lowering total costs of ownership

RS2 is a software development company at its core. So, our BankWORKS® software must work on as many platforms as possible - IBM, Oracle and HPE - to accommodate the various needs of our customers. Those who want to run BankWORKS® under licence now have more options with HPE. More importantly, they can run BankWORKS® at larger volumes with a lower total cost of ownership.

HPE Superdome X is built on open platform architecture, supporting standard LINUX and Windows. Therefore customers don't necessarily need specific engineers to be able to configure the software. This helps cut the costs of maintaining the system as well as total costs of ownership. Superdome hardware is required though, which is something to bear in mind around future hardware investment decisions.

To find out more

Large banks processing globally generate very large volumes. Although our BankWORKS® processing software was always designed for that, customers couldn't deploy BankWORKS® centrally and put those types of volumes through it. Now they can.
