Porsche is readying the latest iteration of its 991 variant of the 911 model in the form of the Targa. As with the previous 911 Targa, the model is likely to be available only in non-turbocharged form, meaning it will be available with the 991's 345-bhp 3.4-litre and 395-bhp 3.8-litre flat-six powertrains that are used in the existing Carrera and Cabriolet 991 variants. The new model looks like a return to the original Targa concept, which featured a removable roof panel combined with a stainless steel clad roll hoop and a rear glass house.

The 991 variant is likely to have a different specific construction but it appears that the new model will refer back to the original 911 Targa in terms of its appearance. This is after the 911 Targa switched from the traditional format with the introduction of the 993 model in the mid-1990s to a sliding glass roof panel. The Targa will be offered as usual alongside the full cabriolet model and will be a relatively low-selling, niche model within the 911 range.

It is the final variant of the 991 Series 911 range to make its debut other than the ultra-high-performance GT2.
