National Grid, the company at the heart of Britain's energy system, is inviting Cleethorpes residents and businesses to find out more about a £450,000 project to upgrade gas mains in the town.

Local people are invited to visit an information bus with full details of the work, which will be located near the Post Office/Pharmacy on Sandringham Road, next Thursday and Friday (19 and 20 January) from 9am to 4pm.

National Grid, in partnership with Amec, will be renewing more than two kilometres of gas mains in Sandringham Road and Trinity Road. The six week project is due to start on 5 February and will involve replacing ageing iron gas mains with new, hard-wearing plastic pipes that will last for more than 80 years if left undisturbed in the ground.

To reduce the need for digging, the new plastic pipe will be inserted into the old metal main. However, to protect engineers and road-users while the work is under way, some traffic management measures will be necessary.

Project manager Martin Richardson said: "National Grid's job is to connect people to the energy they use and this work will help to ensure safe and reliable gas supplies to businesses and residents for decades to come.

"Please come along and meet us next week and we will be happy to answer any questions that anyone has. We apologise for any disruption caused and we will make every effort to minimise any inconvenience."

Gas supplies will only be disrupted on the day that the gas supply is transferred from the old pipe to the new one. Affected residents and businesses will be contacted before work starts in their areas.

Where engineers need access to properties, residents and businesses should ask to see their official identification before letting them in. If in doubt about the identity of an engineer, people are advised to call 0845 6000 320.

This project forms part of National Grid's nationwide gas mains replacement programme, agreed with the Health and Safety Executive.
