Latvijas tilti : The New Overpass Will Benefit Not Only the Port

A ceremonial opening of the new overpass across Nemuno Street was held in the Port of Klaipeda. This two-level junction will not only benefit the efficiency of the Port of Klaipeda enterprises, but will also decrease traffic jams and improve the city's ecological situation.

The beginning of the overpass' operation was symbolically marked by the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

'I am glad that Klaipeda now has another beautiful addition. This object is not only visually pleasing; it is also significant for businesses. Moreover, it will save transportation time and advance traffic circulation, as well as improve the ecological situation of the city. I wish the contractor and port enterprises a successful operation of this structure, which will create a significant added value to the port,' emphasises the Minister of Transport and Communications Rimantas Sinkevicius, who participated in the grand opening of the overpass.

'This overpass will significantly improve the operation of port's cargo enterprises, and we are happy that even this type of infrastructural object makes our city finer, because it is a very beautiful and symbolic structure,' says the Mayor of Klaipeda Vytautas Grubliauskas.

General Director of the Klaipeda State Seaport Authority Arvydas Vaitkus was glad that the construction of the overpass was completed timely, without any additional works, and that it stayed within the planned budget.

'A year and a half - that is how long it took to construct this overpass. I am happy that it was constructed timely, and that during the course of the tender the price was reduced by 40% - from 7.4 million euros to 4.1 million euros - as well as that there were no additional works implemented in the course of execution of this project. This overpass will benefit not only Klaipėdos Smeltė, but other enterprises as well. We hope that it will help to control the traffic stream, and traffic jams at Kalnupes Street will soon disappear completely. This is another step towards cleaner urban environment,' says A. Vaitkus.

The 332-meter long overpass was constructed across five railway tracks and Nemuno Street.

'This object will improve traffic circulation, help to avoid traffic jams and advance road safety. This means that the overpass will create better environment for the provision of services to customers of port enterprises and will significantly shorten the time of arrival and departure from the terminal. This overpass does not only regulate the traffic, it also connects two territories. We are grateful to the Seaport Authority for this incredibly important object,' emphasises the General Director of LKAB Klaipėdos Smeltė Rimantas Juska.

LATVIJAS TILTI Joint-Stock Company and Kauno keliai UAB have constructed this two-level junction (overpass) in less than two years. The construction costs amounted to almost 4.1 million euros including VAT.
