HANG SENG PEARL RIVER DELTA ENVIRONMENTAL AWARDS ACHIEVE NEW PARTICIPATION HIGH
A record-breaking 182 manufacturing companies entered the
4th Hang Seng Pearl River Delta Environmental
Awards (the Awards), introducing environmental measures that
have collectively reduced waste by 630,000 tonnes - an amount
that would cover Shing Mun Reservoir about 226 times.
The 651 environmental projects submitted have also cut water
usage by 2.95 million tonnes (the volume of 740 standard
50-metre swimming pools) and electricity consumption by over
85 million kWh (equivalent to the electricity consumed
annually by 13,000 average four-member families). In
addition, almost 11,000 tonnes of materials have been
recycled (equivalent to an area covering about 300 Victoria
Parks).
Jointly launched by the Federation of Hong Kong Industries
(FHKI) and Hang Seng Bank in 2007, the Awards aim to
encourage manufacturing companies in Hong Kong and the Pearl
River Delta (PRD) region to continually enhance their
environmental performance by recognising and rewarding their
green achievements. Secretary for the Environment, Mr Edward
Yau; Vice-Chairman and Chief Executive of Hang Seng Bank
(China) Limited, Mrs Dorothy Sit; and FHKI Chairman, Dr Roy
Chung, presented the Awards to the 2010/11 winners and
launched the 2011/12 Awards at a ceremony today.
Mrs Sit said: "Implementation of environmental measures in an
organisation requires long-term investment and commitment. I
am delighted that the Awards have been well received by
manufacturing companies, with a continuous increase in both
participation and environmental projects submitted in the
past four years. As a Green Bank, environmental
considerations form an important part of Hang Seng's
corporate strategy. The Bank is committed to improving the
sustainability of our operations and engages in activities
that positively influence the environmental practices of our
staff, customers and the wider community."
Dr Chung said: "The FHKI takes a proactive role in
encouraging industrial and commercial companies to enhance
their environmental performance. We have rolled out a series
of environmental initiatives to raise industry awareness of
environmental protection, and to demonstrate the benefits of
creating a lower-carbon economy. On behalf of the FHKI, I
would like to express my heartfelt appreciation to Hang Seng
Bank for its unfailing support over the past four years,
which has made the Awards a great success."

Dongguan Crystal Knitting and Garment Co., Ltd. (DCKG) was
awarded the Gold Award for its dedication to environmental
protection. Since 2003, DCKG has received ISO14000
Environmental Management System certification and has rolled
out a series of environmental initiatives for its 'Low Carbon
Green Factory' project. These include the adoption of green
lighting, a solar water heating system, servo motors in
sewing machines and the introduction of on-line energy
monitoring to reduce energy wastage. The panel of judges was
highly impressed by all the green measures taken by DCKG.
A total of 99 companies were awarded 'Green Medalist' or
received 'Green Participant' certificates for their
environmental achievements. Among them, 20 companies were
awarded the '3 Years+ Entrant' - a new category of
