Today's design engineers are increasingly exploring the benefits of multicore processors to increase performance out of their designs. Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas, a business region of Avnet, Inc. (NYSE: AVT) and Freescale Semiconductor (NYSE: FSL) have teamed up to offer a series of webinars focusing on making the most of quad core and dual core technologies for next-generation designs. The first webinar, "Why and When Multicore" will take place on January 26, 2012 at 1:00 p.m. EST (11:00 a.m. MST, 10:00 a.m. PST). During the "Why and When Multicore" session, Freescale's Marlan Winter, software and tools product manager, will join Avnet Electronics Marketing Americas Processor Technology Specialist, John Weber to discuss:

  • The trends influencing multicore addition in embedded and other applications
  • Consideration and expectations surrounding performance-to-Watt improvements
  • Design complexity addressing memory, partitioning and virtualization
  • Software and hardware considerations
  • How best to navigate memory usage, peripherals and debugging for a successful implementation.

"There is tremendous design potential associated with multicore solutions," said Weber. "We're creating a webinar series for both system architects and hardware and software engineers to demonstrate the best ways to extract the tremendous performance potential available from a multicore system - this will allow engineers to design systems that can achieve impressive performance, at a manageable power envelope."

"The traditional approach to the development of superscalar microprocessors, where performance gain was derived largely by increasing the frequency, is failing to meet the performance and power requirements of next-generation embedded designs," said Raja Tabet, vice president of Freescale's Software & Systems organization. "There are a number of design considerations that must be taken into account when moving your single- or many- core solution to multicore. Freescale and our ecosystem partners have designed tools to help simplify and ease your migration to multicore. We are excited to deliver this series of webinars to help customers navigate the software and hardware challenges of developing systems based on multicore architectures."
