One person has been killed in the collapse of a roof at New Delhi airport.

Heavy rain and winds caused disruption to flight operations and flooded roads in the Indian capital. Part of the roof and a support beam in the departure area of Terminal 1 had collapsed and flights had been temporarily suspended, India's Aviation Minister Kinjarapu Rammohan Naidu told reporters on Friday. The entire terminal, one of three at the country's largest and busiest airport, was evacuated and an investigation ordered. According to the fire department, eight injured people were hospitalized. Pictures from Indian television channels showed a cab crushed under a destroyed metal pillar in the entrance area of the terminal.

The German airport operator Fraport holds a ten percent stake in the airport and says it is in contact with the airport. India is one of the fastest growing aviation markets in the world. According to government data, domestic air traffic alone reached a record 152 million passengers in 2023.
