• The new certifications, issued by testing and inspection company SGS in accordance with ISO standards 14001 and 50001, come as further confirmation of the real estate firm's commitment to fulfilling its ESG strategy

• The management system will give the company greater oversight of its properties' environmental and energy performance

• This latest development underlines Castellana Properties' strong engagement with sustainability issues. It follows a series of successful initiatives, including a switch to renewable energy at many of its properties

Castellana Properties, a listed company specialising in the retail sector, has been awarded two certifications from SGS in recognition of its overarching Environmental and Energy Management System, now active throughout its portfolio in accordance with ISO standards 14001 and 50001. The new system will give Castellana Properties greater oversight of its properties' environmental and energy performance, based on the reference framework established in international standards.

Under ISO 14001, the company must demonstrate that it has sufficient resources in place to protect the environment, while balancing social and economic needs. This touches on various factors, including environmental protection, mitigation of potential adverse effects, improving environmental performance, etc.

Standard ISO 50001 is intended to help companies develop systems and processes to achieve these goals. It sets out minimum requirements for Energy Management Systems (EMS), which can serve as a framework for establishing a clear energy policy and setting goals, targets and action plans that reflect legal requirements and data on significant energy use. These efforts should be based on the continuous improvement cycle "Plan - Do - Check - Act" (PDCA) and serve to mainstream energy management into all aspects of day-to-day practice.

In achieving these certifications, Castellana Properties continues to uphold its firm commitment to sustainability and advancing its ESG strategy. The company, which recently published its second ESG Report, is not new to sustainability initiatives. Past projects include switching many of its properties to renewable energy sources, expanding its Building Management System (BMS), introducing enhanced monitoring at its shopping centres and rolling out electric vehicle charging points across its portfolio. Castellana Properties has already obtained BREEAM certification for all of its shopping centres, registered its carbon footprint with Spain's Ministry for the Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge (MITECO) and devised a decarbonisation plan through its partnership with CRREM. The company has pledged to uphold the objectives of the Paris Agreement and meet the requirements of the EU Sustainable Finance Taxonomy.

Jorge Orondo, Senior Energy & Utilities Manager at Castellana Properties, remarked: "These certifications from SGS mark another step on our path towards a sustainable and environmentally responsible portfolio. Castellana Properties will continue to take decisive action against climate change in line with our ESG strategy."
