Befesa Chile and industrial managment waste

Befesa Chile, through its subsidiary Soluciones Ambientales del Norte, specialises in the integral management of hazardous and non-hazardous solid industrial waste using temporary storage and end-disposal systems as well as treatments to recover the wastes and to minimise its toxicity, prioritising its recycling whenever possible.

The plant, which has been operational since May 2008, is located in the Antofagasta region in the commune of Sierra Gorda. It is situated in the Atacama Desert at Km 45 of the B-385 highway some 120 km north east of the city of Antofagasta and 1600 km from the capital of Santiago, on a 40 hectare site in Zone AEC-4, which the regulatory plan of the commune has designated as "Zone reserved for regional mining and industrial waste disposal projects".

The type of industrial waste received varies greatly and comes from mining industries as well as from the region's industry in a wide range of sectors.

When waste arrives at the plant, it passes through a reception and weighing stage, where the status of the cargo and its documentation are controlled and verified. Once the waste has been weighed and the corresponding work order has been opened, it moves to the unloading zone (parking area for hazardous and non-hazardous waste, as appropriate).

Non-hazardous waste is taken to the recovery and storage building to be recycled and subsequently disposed of.

Hazardous waste will be taken to the hazardous waste temporary storage building, where it will undergo an inertisation process before its end disposal, or sent for external treatment if it cannot be treated at our facilities.

Our facility has separate secure landfills for hazardous and non-hazardous industrial waste.

Regarding our key production figures, Befesa Chile received 17,522 t of waste in 2012

Befesa Chile has an integrated management system certified under the ISO 9001, ISO 14001 and OHSAS 18001 standards, through which we ensure compliance with the highest standards of quality, environmental care and occupational safety in all the services that we provide.

We also calculate the greenhouse gases (GHG) generated by our operations in order to reduce and/or offset 100% of our emissions.
