The Food and Drug Administration said Wednesday that there have been supply interruptions for Becton Dickinson's BD BACTEC blood culture media bottles, which is expected to impact patient diagnosis and antimicrobial stewardship efforts.

Becton Dickinson said it is experiencing reduced availability of blood culture vials from its supplier. The company said it is taking all available measures to address the issue, including "providing the supplier our manufacturing expertise, using air shipments, modifying BD manufacturing schedules for rapid production," and collaborating with the FDA.

The company said that as an additional stopgap measure, its former supplier of glass vials will restart production.
