Boil Advisory Extended for Certain Indiana American Water Customers near Selma Precautionary boil water advisory extended for approximately 1,000 customers Muncie, Ind. (January 17, 2012) - Indiana American Water's Muncie District has extended a precautionary boil water advisory through at least Wednesday afternoon for approximately 1,000 customers located on the east side of Muncie near Selma to conduct additional water testing after a 20-inch water main break near Elm and Seymour Streets in Muncie on Monday morning.
The affected area is generally located east of Gray Street
along State Road 32 and includes the town of Selma. The main
break significantly reduced pressure for customers in the
affected area on Monday morning for approximately one hour.
Service was restored around noon on Monday after crews were
able to isolate the broken section of main. Customers in the
affected area are advised to drink and cook with tap water
only after boiling it for five minutes. Tap water can be used
for washing/bathing.
The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM)
mandates precautionary boil advisories to ensure high-quality
water in the event water pressure drops below 20 pounds per
square inch (psi) in any part of a distribution system.
According to company officials, boil advisories are issued as
a precaution with a customer's best interests in mind.
It's possible, but unlikely, bacteria could enter
the
water system when pressure in the line drops below 20 psi.
