Air Liquide announced on Tuesday that it had signed its first long-term contract with South African petrochemical company Sasol to supply a site with renewable energy.

The two groups say they have signed two long-term contracts (PPA) with Enel Green Power to supply renewable energy to Sasol's Secunda site in South Africa, where Air Liquide operates the world's largest oxygen production site.

For the record, the industrial gases manufacturer had bought the oxygen production units at the Secunda site from Sasol, which it will operate from 2021 under a long-term supply contract.

These PPAs - with a total capacity of 220 MW - are the first to be signed as part of a call for tenders launched jointly by the two groups, with the aim of securing a total capacity of 900 MW of renewable energy.

Of this figure, 500 MW will go to Sasol and 400 MW to Air Liquide.

This project will contribute to the decarbonization of the Secunda site, which has set itself the target of reducing its CO2 emissions associated with oxygen production by 30% to 40% by 2031.
