Ghana's rice import is forecast to fall by 13% in the current year due to reduced trade, U.S. Agriculture Department said late Wednesday.

Imports have been revised down in July to 700,000 metric tons from an earlier forecast of 800,000 tons in June, the USDA said in its 'Grain: World Markets and Trade' report.

Ghana's milled-rice production is forecast to rise by 16% to 800,000 tons in the marketing year beginning October 2023 through September 2024, the USDA said in its recent annual Ghana grain and feed report.

In 2023-24 marketing year, rainfall is expected to be normal or below normal, according to the Ghana Meteorological Agency, but this forecast isn't expected to discourage rice farmers from expanding their farms due to a sharp increase by 95% of paddy price in the current marketing year, compared with a year earlier, it said.
