Producers of metals and other raw materials fell as a rally in the sector stalled.

Silver futures closed at another 11-year high, but more widely traded gold futures slipped as the U.S. dollar rebounded.

Investors are awaiting clearer signals from inflation and economic-growth data on whether the Federal Reserve is likely to cut rates this year. The number of Americans who applied for unemployment benefits last week fell by 10,000 to 222,000 and indicated the U.S. is still experiencing a low level of layoffs.
