Wisconsin Corn Promotion Board : WOTUS Veto Wrong for Corn Farmers

The following is a statement from Wisconsin Corn Growers Association President Casey Kelleher regarding President Obama's veto of a resolution disapproving of the Environmental Protection Agency's new definition of 'Waters of the United States' (WOTUS).

'The President's veto of this resolution ignores sound science and the huge impact this rule will have on farmers. Worse, the veto backs the underhanded way EPA went about finalizing this rule.

'We need our entire congressional delegation, especially in the U.S. Senate, to step up and override this veto. If Congress doesn't override the President's veto, we hope the courts will stop the rule.

'We can't have a rule written so poorly that just about every farmer in the U.S. could have at least one feature on their farm now considered a WOTUS. Even the Army Corps said WOTUS is unworkable, and that the entire economic analysis used by EPA to support the rule had no basis on economics or science.

'Clean water is important to all of us. Wisconsin's corn farmers are committed to protecting our water resources for future generations. This WOTUS rule is not the route to take.'

WCGA is a membership organization that represents the interest of state corn growers in the growing and managing of corn grown both for on-farm feeding and commercial sale. WCGA brings together corn growers to provide information and education at regional corn conferences and the annual Wisconsin Corn/Soy EXPO. As part of NCGA, WCGA represents corn grower interests nationally and internationally and also sponsors annual corn yield contests.
