Yesterday marks the first major compliance date for large farms under the Produce Safety Rule (PSR). Large farms are farms who have more than $500,000 in average annual produce sales during the previous three year period.
To meet the compliance requirements for most hullers that fall within the farm definition, WAPA has created a Food Safety Plan for Tree Nut Hullers that meets the Food Safety Modernization Act's (FSMA) PSR*. The Food Safety Plan focuses on the key requirements of the rule and has translated them into a plan specific for each commodity. Three plans were created: Food Safety Plan for Almond Hullers & Shellers; Food Safety Plan for Walnut Hullers and Dehydrators; and Food Safety Plan for Pistachio Hullers.
Last year, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) and California Department of Food and Agriculture (CDFA) announced that routine inspections under the rule would be postponed until 2019 to allow time during this upcoming year for additional education, outreach, and training. However, we want to be sure our members are in compliance by their compliance date.
The food safety plan is exclusively free to all WAPA Huller members! Please contact our office for your Food Safety Plan.
*The agricultural water subsection compliance has been extended to January 2022, therefore the WAPA Food Safety Committee has decided to postpone including these specific requirements as well. The section will be updated to meet the new requirements after FDA releases them.
