In commodities, Brent crude gained 0.4% to $84.28 a barrel, and WTI crude climbed 0.5% to $80.20 a barrel. The European benchmark price for natural gas, the Dutch futures contract TTF, was up 2.2% to EUR34.28 a megawatt hour.

The German 10-year Bund yield climbed by 4 basis points to 2.636% from 2.596%, and the yield on the 10-year U.S. Treasury rose by 2 basis points to 4.575% from 4.557%. Bond prices and yields move in opposite directions.

Stocks in Asia were mixed as Japan's Nikkei 225 index dropped 0.8%, and Hong Kong's Hang Seng dropped 1.6%, whereas China's benchmark Shanghai Composite was flat.
