On 11 January 2022, the Secretary General of the World Customs Organization (WCO), Dr. Kunio Mikuriya, met with the Prime Minister of Japan, H.E. Fumio Kishida, in Tokyo to discuss the WCO's future activities.

The Prime Minister showed great interest in the WCO's wide-ranging activities and acknowledged the significant contribution by Customs in securing and facilitating global trade, including the cross-border movement of medicines and vaccines along the supply chain. s Japan's former Minister of Foreign Affairs, he is well versed in the work of and challenges faced by Customs administrations at borders, as well as in their critical role of maintaining global stability and prosperity. Prime Minister Kishida concluded the meeting by expressing his strong support for the WCO in its endeavours to build the capacity of Member Customs administrations and equip them with the tools and instruments required to improve their performance.

Secretary General Mikuriya also had meetings with Japan's Minister of Finance, H.E. Shunichi Suzuki, and its Minister of Foreign Affairs, H.E. Yoshimasa Hayashi. They all acknowledged the WCO's leadership role and were very much in favour of consolidating the position of Customs administrations around the world.
