Technavio’s latest report on the global furniture logistics market 2016-2020 provides an analysis on the most important trends expected to drive the market growth through 2020. Technavio defines an emerging trend as a factor that has the potential to significantly impact the market and contribute to its growth or decline.

The top four emerging trends in the global furniture logistics market 2016-2020 are as follows:

Rise in investment in technology

Investment in technologies helps furniture logistics service providers enhance their delivery services and monitor the movement of furniture more accurately, and with shorter lead times. The use of technologies such as warehouse management software, automated material handling equipment, warehouse control software, and other evolving technologies such as mobile technology, global positioning systems, trailer seals, RFID, and biometrics is expected to help the furniture logistics providers maintain a balance in inventory levels, and monitor furniture products correctly.

Sharan Raj, a lead analyst from Technavio’s transportation and logistics research team says, “AmeriCold announced the introduction of Xpedite, a round-the-clock service that offers coordination and expedited delivery of full truckloads and LTL shipments. C.H. Robinson has also developed its Welch’s Fresh Grapes distribution channels to meet the global demand for fruit and vegetables.”

Advances in technology

The furniture logistics service providers have a range of IT-enable services such as GPS-enabled transportation trucks for tracking, RFID for inventory tracking, bar coding, and MIS-related services, which increase the efficiency of logistics services with respect to scheduling transportation and delivery, and inventory management.

However, due to the high costs involved, the adoption of these technologically advanced equipment is low, thus restricting the growth of the market.

Multiple value-added services offered by vendors

At present, vendors in this market provide different types of logistics services such as assortment and grading of products, packaging, MIS services in the logistics supply chain, and legal processes. This makes it tedious for the shipper to outsource various tasks to different vendors. Therefore, “the market is witnessing a trend where shippers are increasingly choosing furniture logistics providers that offer a one-stop solution for all the needs of vendors,” explains Technavio’s lead analyst, Sharan Raj.

Adoption of eco-friendly vehicles

An increase in environmental awareness among shippers has raised concerns over pollution created by vehicles used in logistics. In addition to vehicles, shippers are concerned about other sources of pollution such as recycling units and secondary sources of pollution that are caused by packaging and warehousing. They also prefer vendors that have smaller carbon footprints and generate fewer pollutants.

Therefore, to overcome these issues, furniture logistics providers use eco-friendly electric vehicles and have also switched to renewable sources of energy and the use of hydrogen fuel cells to generate energy.

“Many top logistics companies have already shifted toward the Go-Green concept, which is likely be one of the major trends in the global furniture logistics market over the next four years,” says Technavio’s research analyst Sharan Raj M.
