Szijjártó: The UN must take action to calm tensions in the Middle East

'The United Nations must take action in the interests of calming tension in the Middle East and must contribute to the soonest possible satisfactory resolution of the Iran-US conflict', Minister of Foreign Affairs and Trade Péter Szijjártó declared in New York at an open debate held to mark the 75th anniversary of the global organisation.

In his speech, the Minister said Hungary is clearly concerned about developments in the region, and the country has an interest in the regional conflict not escalating further.

'The government expects the UN, as the largest international organisation responsible for guaranteeing global peace and security, to finally not act as a busybody promoting migration, but to concern itself with its actual job and provide assistance to ensure that tensions do not escalate, in accordance with the principles set down in its statutes', he underlined.

According to the Minister, three main facts must be taken into consideration. Firstly, that the security of the Middle East and Europe are closely related, and certain unfavourable developments could lead to an increase in migration pressure, which is something that must be avoided. In addition, the continuation of global action against terrorism is extremely important, as is preventing the proliferation of nuclear weapons.

Later, Mr. Szijjártó will be holding bilateral talks with Vietnamese Foreign Minister Pham Binh Minh, Estonian Foreign Minister Urmas Reinsalu, and UN Under-Secretary-General Vladimir Voronkov. Vietnam currently holds the rotating presidency of the UN Security Council, while Estonia will be a member of the body until the middle of next year.
