Refinery receipts increase

Canadian refineries received 7.7 million cubic metres of crude oil in October, up 0.8% from October 2014.

During the same period, refinery receipts of domestic crude oil increased 1.1% to 5.4 million cubic metres.

Crude oil imports decreased 0.2% from October 2014 to 2.2 million cubic metres in October. Imports represented 29.0% of total crude oil received at refineries in Canada.

Refinery production up

Refinery production rose 1.1% from October 2014 to 8.5 million cubic metres in October. Motor gasoline contributed the most to the gain, increasing 10.5% to 3.3 million cubic metres.

Sales decline

Domestic sales of refined petroleum products fell 3.3% from the same month in 2014 to 9.1 million cubic metres in October. This decrease was mainly attributable to an 8.8% drop in diesel fuel oil to 2.6 million cubic metres.

Three types of fuel that are mainly used for transportation accounted for 76.9% of total refined petroleum product sales in October: motor gasoline (41.9%), diesel fuel oil (28.5%) and aviation turbo fuel (6.5%).

Transportation sector the largest user of refined petroleum products in 2014

The transportation sector accounted for 58.1% of all refined petroleum products consumed in 2014. (For detailed information on annual fuel use by industry, consult the article, 'Energy supply and demand, 2014,' released in The Daily on December 10, 2015.)

Within the transportation sector, the retail pump sales subsector (67.4%) used the largest share of refined petroleum products in 2014, followed by road transport and urban transport (16.3%), airlines (9.6%) and railways, marine and pipelines (6.7%).

Motor gasoline (58.1%) accounted for the largest share of refined petroleum products consumed in the transportation sector, followed by diesel fuel oil (30.4%) aviation turbo fuel (9.7%) and other petroleum products (1.8%).

Note to readers

The Monthly Refined Petroleum Products survey collects data on the activities of every Canadian refinery involved in the production of refined petroleum products (North American Industry Classification System [NAICS] 324000) and of selected major distributors of these products (NAICS 412000).

Domestic sales include all sales by reporting companies, excluding exports and sales to other reporting companies.

Refinery receipts of crude oil and equivalent hydrocarbons (condensates and pentanes plus) from domestic and foreign sources are for refinery consumption or storage.
