Overnight work is scheduled for the A50 next week to keep roadside workers safe.

Beginning on Monday (Jan 29) one carriageway will be closed each night for six nights between 8pm and 5.30am to create temporary narrow lanes at the major project to upgrade a junction of the A50 and A522 at Uttoxeter.

Mark Winnington, Staffordshire County Council's Cabinet member for Economic Growth, said:

The project is on schedule to be completed later this year and we have a period coming up where contractors will be working close to the A50 dual carriageway.

To keep them safe and to keep traffic moving at the same time we will be creating narrow lanes with a 50mph speed limit.'

The work means the A50 will be closed one-way between the A521 roundabout at Blythe Bridge and the B5030 roundabout at Uttoxeter, where McDonald's stands.

On Monday January 29, Tuesday 30 and Saturday February 3, the westbound carriageway will be closed. On Wednesday January 31, Thursday February 1 and Friday 2, the A50 eastbound carriageway will be closed

The diversion route will be the same for vehicles travelling in both directions. From the east, traffic will be diverted northwards from the A50 at Uttoxeter on to the B5030 for a few hundred yards to the roundabout with the A518. Traffic will turn right there, cross back over the A50 along The Dove Way and continue on the A518 clockwise around Uttoxeter and follow the road towards Stafford. Vehicles will then follow the A51 and A34 towards Stoke-on-Trent, before joining the A500 and then the A50 to Blythe Bridge.

The Shell petrol station, which stands on the westbound carriageway a few hundred yards west of the B5030 roundabout, will open as normal and access will be maintained at all times via the A522. Full access will also be maintained at all times to The Parks restaurant, which is open as usual.

The new A522 bridge across the A50, together with three new roundabouts, new slip roads, link roads and the removal of the old bridge are being delivered by Staffordshire County Council, on behalf of Highways England, to support business and unlock land for new housing and economic growth.

Mark Winnington said:

To minimise inconvenience we are arranging for the closures to take place overnight with a well signposted diversion route which is suitable for all vehicles, including HGVs, and I would like to thank the public for their patience.'
