COLUMBIA, S.C., Jan. 31, 2019 /PRNewswire/ -- Carolinas AGC (CAGC) leaders met with South Carolina Governor Henry McMaster, Lieutenant Governor Pam Evette and key members of the S.C. Legislature on Jan. 29th to promote the thousands of good-paying jobs that are available now in the construction industry throughout the Carolinas.

"Our biggest challenge is the workforce shortage at a time when the jobs are there and you can make real good money," Scott Fant, past chair of the CAGC Board of Directors, told Governor McMaster.

The governor and lieutenant governor, in separate meetings with more than 50 CAGC members and staff, voiced strong support for promoting construction as a career as well as beefing up construction education and training in the public schools and community colleges. In addition, the governor has included a top goal of CAGC in the state legislature this year – allocating $950,000 for a Be Pro, Be Proud tractor-trailer that could be driven throughout the state to offer hands-on construction demonstrations and exhibits.

The visits with the top two S.C. politicians, along with key members of the legislature, were part of CAGC's Annual S.C. Legislative Day at the Statehouse in Columbia. During the daylong event, CAGC members were introduced in the S.C. House of Representatives by Rep. Chris Wooten of Lexington County and in the S.C. Senate by Sen. Thomas Alexander of Oconee County. In addition, CAGC members had the privilege of meeting McMaster and Evette outside their offices at the State Capitol. Both state leaders shared their passion for education, specifically focusing on their interests in maintaining the state's booming economy. They also shared their clear understanding of the need for an educated and skilled workforce and the importance of the construction industry, with state government and technical colleges leaders all working together to make that happen.

CAGC members ended the day with several hundred representatives of the construction and design community hosting the members of the S.C. General Assembly. The annual event is part of CAGC's continuing efforts to connect CAGC members with key leaders of the state legislatures to promote construction as a career. CAGC will hold a similar N.C. Legislative Day on May 1 in Raleigh.
